Tora-Kai: How Dandenong Nissan Is Building Its Own Nissan Adventure Vehicles

Tora-Kai is a name you may start seeing more often around Melbourne's south-east. But what exactly is it?

At Dandenong Nissan, modifying a Nissan doesn't necessarily mean simply adding a set of wheels, tyres or a bullbar.

The dealership has developed Tora-Kai, an in-house vehicle enhancement program focused specifically on creating highly customised Nissan Navara and Patrol vehicles for off-road, touring and adventure applications.

Rather than being a single vehicle specification or factory model, Tora-Kai is a build philosophy. Each vehicle is individually configured, enhanced, styled and numbered, with the combination of components selected around the intended use of the vehicle.

The result is a collection of Nissan vehicles that can look very different from one another while sharing the Tora-Kai identity.

What Is Tora-Kai?

Tora-Kai is the name given to Dandenong Nissan's exclusive in-house enhanced vehicle program.

The program currently focuses on the D27 Nissan Navara and Y62 Nissan Patrol, with vehicles individually configured with combinations of wheels, tyres, lighting, protection, touring equipment, electrical systems and other enhancements.

Dylan, Sales Manager at Dandenong Nissan describes Tora-Kai as being developed around three key ideas:

Ruggedness. Toughness. Off-road capability.

Together, Tora-Kai represents the idea of creating something greater than the individual components that go into the vehicle. Importantly, "Tora-Kai isn't a single fixed specification. That's one of the most interesting aspects of the program" says Dylan.

More Than a Dealer Accessory Package

There is an important difference between a conventional dealer accessory package and the Tora-Kai approach. A traditional accessory package might consist of a predetermined combination of wheels, tyres, a bullbar and perhaps a few cosmetic additions.

Tora-Kai takes a more comprehensive approach. The vehicle is treated as a complete build. That can involve everything from its wheels and tyres through to lighting, protection, touring equipment, electrical systems and even GVM upgrades.

Dylan shows us while explaining "The individual vehicle is then given its own Tora-Kai build number and build plate. This means that two Tora-Kai vehicles don't necessarily have to be identical. In fact, the philosophy is that they shouldn't be".

According to Dylan and his team of Nissan Product Specialists, every build is individually crafted, styled and numbered, with its own combination of enhancements and visual treatment.

Why Start With the Nissan Navara and Patrol?

There is a natural connection between Tora-Kai and the two Nissan vehicles selected for the program says Dylan while showing two of their most impressive builds to date.

"The Navara is Nissan's ladder-frame dual-cab pickup, designed around the combination of payload, towing and off-road capability."

The current D27 Navara is available exclusively in Australia and New Zealand as a Dual Cab 4x4 Pick-Up and features a 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel engine producing 150kW and 470Nm, with a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500kg.

"The Y62 Patrol, meanwhile, occupies a very different part of the 4WD market. It's a large, full-size 4WD wagon with a long-standing reputation for long-distance touring, towing and off-road use. That makes the two vehicles interesting starting points for customised builds. One is a ute. One is a large 4WD wagon. But both provide the foundation for building something considerably more specialised" cites Dylan.

Tora-Kai Wheels and Tyres

One of the most immediately visible parts of any Tora-Kai build is its wheel and tyre combination. Dandenong Nissan offers a range of wheel designs and all-terrain tyre options, allowing the stance and capability of each vehicle to be tailored to its intended purpose.

This is more than a cosmetic decision. For a vehicle intended to spend time away from sealed roads, tyres are a critical part of the vehicle's overall capability. The right combination can influence traction, ground clearance, sidewall protection, ride characteristics and performance on different surfaces.

Tora-Kai takes that concept further by allowing the wheel and tyre package to become part of the overall build.

Lighting: Function Before Decoration

Another major component of the Tora-Kai program is lighting.

Dandenong Nissan sources lighting solutions from specialist manufacturers including Nissan, STEDI and Ironman 4x4, with configurations ranging from driving light combinations to integrated bullbar lighting, LED light bars and roof-mounted systems.

For an off-road vehicle, auxiliary lighting has an obvious practical purpose. Australian touring can involve long distances between towns, limited ambient lighting and tracks where visibility becomes a genuine consideration.

A Tora-Kai lighting package can therefore be configured around the way the vehicle is expected to be used. A vehicle primarily used for weekend touring might have a different lighting configuration to one designed for more remote off-road travel.

Protection and Bar Work

"The front of a 4WD is one of the areas most exposed to hazards when travelling away from sealed roads" demonstrates Dylan while presenting the dealerships Desert Red Ti-L Tora-Kai Patrol(pictured)

"Tora-Kai offers a selection of bullbars and protection systems sourced from manufacturers including Nissan, DASH, Raslar, Ironman 4x4 and ARB.  Again, the emphasis isn't simply on appearance. Bullbars and protection systems can provide a mounting platform for recovery and lighting equipment while adding protection around vulnerable areas of the vehicle".

Some Tora-Kai bar packages can also be colour-coded to the vehicle's factory paintwork, giving the finished vehicle a more integrated appearance.

The Electrical Side of a Modern Touring Vehicle

Modern touring vehicles can require considerably more electrical capacity than a standard vehicle.

Fridges, Lighting, Communications equipment, Recovery gear, Camping equipment, and increasingly, off-grid electrical systems. Tora-Kai builds can incorporate off-grid battery systems, solar solutions and inverter packages, with these systems supplied through specialist partner 4x4 DNA Melbourne.

This represents an important shift in how people use their 4WDs.

A modern touring vehicle can effectively become a mobile base camp, with the vehicle's electrical system supporting equipment for days away from conventional power.

From Weekend Adventure to Serious Touring

Tora-Kai isn't limited to one type of off-road enthusiast. The same Navara or Patrol platform can be configured for very different purposes. A relatively simple build might concentrate on:

  • Wheels and all-terrain tyres
  • Lighting
  • Protection
  • Styling

A more comprehensive touring build could incorporate:

  • Roof platforms
  • Rooftop tents
  • Solar systems
  • Auxiliary batteries
  • Inverters
  • Touring equipment
  • GVM upgrades

This creates an important distinction between a modified vehicle and a purpose-built vehicle. The modification isn't necessarily about adding as many accessories as possible. It's about selecting equipment that works together for the intended application.

Why GVM Upgrades Matter

One of the less visible considerations in building a heavily equipped touring vehicle is weight.

A bullbar, winch, larger wheels and tyres, roof platform, rooftop tent, fridge, recovery equipment, camping equipment and additional electrical systems can add considerable mass to a vehicle. That is where Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) becomes important.

Dylan states "GVM is the maximum legally permissible mass of a vehicle when loaded, including the vehicle itself, occupants, fuel, accessories and cargo. Tora-Kai builds can incorporate GVM upgrades through specialist partners where appropriate. This is an area that deserves careful consideration whenever a vehicle is being substantially modified for touring"

A good 4WD build isn't simply about making a vehicle look capable. It is about ensuring the modifications are appropriate for the vehicle's intended use and the loads it will carry.

Tora-Kai Build Plates: Why Number Each Vehicle?

While showing us through the Patrol Ti-L Tora-Kai(Pictured), Dylan was really excited showing us this unique additional to all their in-house builds. He said "Perhaps the most unusual element of the program is the Tora-Kai build plate. Every Tora-Kai vehicle receives its own numbered build plate. The number identifies that particular vehicle as part of the Tora-Kai lineage rather than simply identifying it as a Nissan with aftermarket accessories.

It's a small detail, but it reflects one of the central ideas behind the program:

Every Tora-Kai is its own vehicle.

The specification, components and visual treatment can vary from build to build. The build plate provides a permanent connection between that individual vehicle and the Tora-Kai program".

Tora-Kai and Warrior Are Not the Same Thing

For Nissan enthusiasts, this distinction is important. Tora-Kai should not be confused with Warrior by Premcar. The Warrior program is an official Nissan Australia vehicle enhancement program developed and manufactured by PremCar in Australia.

Premcar has been working with Nissan on the Warrior program since the launch of the Navara N-Trek Warrior in 2019, with the program subsequently expanding to include Navara and Patrol models.

Tora-Kai is different.

Tora-Kai is Dandenong Nissan's own in-house vehicle enhancement program. It brings together Nissan vehicles and a selection of specialist aftermarket components to create individually configured builds. So while both approaches involve enhancing Nissan vehicles for Australian conditions and off-road use, they operate at different levels.

Tora-Kai

A Dandenong Nissan in-house build program using individually selected components and configurations. Understanding that distinction is important when discussing modified Nissan vehicles in Australia.

Why Dandenong?

The story of Tora-Kai doesn't begin in a boardroom, a marketing department or with a manufacturer blueprint.

It began with a problem.

Several years ago, following Dandenong Nissan's acquisition from another automotive group, the dealership inherited a substantial volume of Nissan Navara stock. There was simply more stock than the market was absorbing, and as the vehicles began to age, the pressure of carrying such a large inventory became increasingly difficult.

Dealer Principal Lee knew something had to change.

"We needed to do something about this stock," recalls Dylan, Dandenong Nissan's Sales Manager.

Lee's response was simple: "think differently".

Rather than competing with other dealers on price, Lee encouraged Dylan to explore something other dealerships weren't doing.

Modify the vehicles.

As Lee put it at the time: "Dress them up in pretty clothes, put them on the front line and they will sell"

It was a suggestion Dylan initially struggled with. The vehicles were already sitting in stock, and the obvious question was: why add more cost to inventory that was already becoming difficult to move?

But Dylan agreed to give the idea a try. And it worked. That experiment became KAMODA, Dandenong Nissan's first dedicated custom vehicle program, created specifically around the D23 Navara. Rather than simply adding a few accessories to a vehicle, Dandenong Nissan began creating something that felt different from a standard showroom Navara.

The vehicles had their own identity. They were Dandenong Nissan builds. They were recognisable. And, importantly, they were exclusive to the dealership.

More than 50 KAMODA vehicles eventually found homes with owners across Australia.

"What started as a solution to a stock problem became a really successful program," Dylan recalls. "It was our brand, it was exclusive to us, and we started seeing KAMODA vehicles turning up all over Australia."

The original objective may have been solving an inventory challenge, but something much more significant had happened. Dandenong Nissan had discovered that it could create something of its own.

When the D27 Navara arrived, it presented an opportunity to start again. The D23 era had produced KAMODA. The next generation deserved something new. It was time to rebrand, reinvent and evolve.

That became Tora-Kai.

The name was deliberately chosen to represent more than a modified Nissan.

"Tora" — Tiger, representing raw strength, courage and dominance.

"Kai", representing unity, mastery and a force greater than the individual.

"Together, Tora-Kai represents a mindset. It speaks to people who don't simply follow the track — they make their own. People who don't see the end of the road as the end of the journey. People who look at a mountain not simply as an obstacle, but as another reason to keep going" Dylan recites from their special Tora-Kai page within the Dandenong Nissan website.

The name Tora-Kai is more than a badge. It's the philosophy behind the builds. A Tora-Kai vehicle isn't simply about where the vehicle can go. It's about how it feels to get there. Not just built for the road less travelled. Built for the road that doesn't exist.

A Dealership Project With a Personal Touch

While Tora-Kai carries the Dandenong Nissan name, its development has been driven heavily by one person's willingness to turn an idea into something tangible. For Dylan, it has become something of a pet project.

Over years in the automotive industry, Dylan has developed an extensive network of contacts across both the OEM and aftermarket automotive industries. That network has become an important part of the Tora-Kai concept, allowing Dandenong Nissan to bring together accessory suppliers, lighting specialists, suspension companies, electrical experts and other specialists to create a complete vehicle rather than simply a collection of accessories.

But contacts and suppliers only tell part of the story. The other part is creativity. The ability to look at a standard vehicle and ask: "What could this become?"

That mindset has influenced everything from the way Tora-Kai vehicles are specified to the visual identity of the program. The Tora-Kai name, logo and overall concept were developed from Dylan's own creative vision, turning an idea that began with excess Navara stock into a recognisable Dandenong Nissan vehicle program.

And that is perhaps what makes Tora-Kai different. It wasn't created because Nissan needed another model. It wasn't handed down as a manufacturer program. It wasn't copied from another dealership.

It grew organically from Dandenong Nissan. From a stock problem, to KAMODA.

From KAMODA, to Tora-Kai.

And today, the program continues to evolve alongside the vehicles it is built around. Tora-Kai wasn't born from a desire to sell more accessories. It was born from the belief that a dealership could take a standard Nissan, surround it with the right people and expertise, and create something that felt genuinely different.

Something that started at Dandenong.

Something that belongs to Dandenong.

Something built to go well beyond it.
